What is the Portugal Residence by Investment Program?
The Portugal Residence by Investment program launched by the government in 2012 is also known as the Golden Visa. This six-year residency by investment scheme for non-EU nationals is a fast-track program for obtaining a residence permit and ultimately citizenship through investment and has attracted investors the world over. The most popular investments are in Funds and the Art and Cultural Heritage options.

What is the process of obtaining the Residence by Invesmtent program?
- Be a non-EU/EEA or a non-Swiss national
- Open a personal bank account and NIF in Portugal
- Compile personal documents for the main applicant and his/her dependents
- Have a clean criminal record
- Choose the investment and make the payment (ensure the funds for the investment arrive from outside of Portugal)
- Submission of all documents for validation
- Attend the appointment scheduled by the Immigration office (AIMA) in Portugal for the biometrics to be taken and for submission of the original documents
- Receive a temporary resident card valid for two years which will be renewed thereafter twice, for another two years
- On completion of the 5th year, apply for permanent residence and / or Portuguese citizenship

What Investment options qualify for the program?
1. €500,000 in funds, which then invests this money into Portuguese companies, or the stock market.
a. Investors must keep their investment in the fund for at least 5 years.
b. The investment is usually returned together with the earned profits which are split among investors.
2. € 500,000 for research activities of public or private entities that are part of the national scientific and technological system.
a. € 400,000.00 in a low density area*
3. € 250,000 in support of artistic production or in the recovery or maintenance of national cultural heritage.
a. € 200,000.00 in a low density area.*
1. Creation of a minimum of ten new jobs.
a. Eight new jobs in a low population density area.
2. Invest a minimum of €500,000 in a new or existing Portuguese business.
a. This must create a minimum of five new jobs for a minimum of three years.
*A low density area is defined as less than 100 inhabitants per sq.km. or with a GDP per capita below 75% of the national average.
