Digital Nomad Visa

The D8 visa – Remote Worker Visa is an alternative path to obtain Portugal Residency for remote workers or freelancers who wish to reside in Portugal on a long-term basis. The 4-month visa entitles the applicant to apply for a resident card in Portugal. It is important that the applicant demonstrates the active income requirements and provides evidence of his/her financial stability.

Overview

The D8 Visa is a specialized visa tailored for remote workers, freelancers, and digital nomads, enabling individuals who work remotely to establish Portugal as their base. Applicants must earn at least four times the minimum wage in Portugal. 


This longer-term option permits stays of up to five years. It can be renewed or converted into permanent residency after the initial five-year period. After residing in Portugal for five years, individuals can also apply for Portuguese citizenship.

Elegibility

Any non-EU/EEA or Swiss citizen may apply for this visa if they can demonstrate that they have sufficient active income, a long-term employment or retainer agreement with a foreign company, and earn at least four times the minimum monthly wage.

Yes, family members can join the main applicant through a family reunification process, which allows spouses, children, and dependent relatives to apply for residence permits under the same visa terms.

Is there a mandatory minimum stay requirement to maintain the D8 visa?

The minimum stay requirement mandates that individuals do not exceed 6 consecutive or 8 non-consecutive months outside the country during the validity of each temporary permit. However, residence permits will not be cancelled for citizens absent longer if they can prove engagement in professional, business, social, or cultural activities abroad. 

Can the D8 visa lead to permanent residency in Portugal?

Yes, after five years of holding the D8 visa and meeting the residency requirements, applicants may apply for permanent residency or citizenship, provided they fulfill all legal conditions.
